Summer Prep! Two Modkid Patterns

Dudes.

I accomplished a lot over the past three-ish weeks!  I whipped out three dresses, one pair of shorts and one pair of capris!  One dress, the Roller Skate, is already blogged up.
Top #2 for the day...the first one was immediately stained

The two dresses will be written about later, but for today, I am featuring two Modkid patterns - the Grace and the Hannah.  Sadly, for both version, I only did the bottoms.  I didn't have enough of any shirt fabric to match ANYthing I was able to use for the shorts, and I didn't want to make the top for the Grace, because the last time I made it, I had a horrible fit on Camden, though it may have been that I used a heavy fabric in the top portion.

So!  Nothing too grand to say about the Grace pattern.  I have made the capris once before, though I had wanted to make them last year and never got around to it.  There are only TWO pattern pieces, peeps.  I LOVE that.  I mean, there IS a ruffle, but I'm not into ruffles, so, no, thanks ;)  This pattern doesn't require much fabric, which is also great!  I may have lengthened the size I made, just to get a bit more wear out of them, but otherwise, they're great!!!  I am awesome, too (LOL), and used stash left-overs from Camden's Sunday Brunch outfit I sewed two Christmases ago.  Yay me!  These'll work great with any camisoles or tees.
She LOVES these Princess in Black books!

As for the Hannah shorts - I am so excited about what I did with them to jazz up the pattern.  I didn't use buttons at the cuffs, but I knew they'd be pretty lame if I added NO interest.  So, the easy way for me to do that, in this case, was to cut against the grain for the inner pocket piece and the back pockets.  As for the back pocket trim, I then cut on the bias - and made sure to use interfacing to get a crisp finish! - to add extra spice.  They fit super well, and I smile every time I see Camden wear them, aha!  I used a blue shot cotton for the cuff facings and the pocket lining, and that's important to ME, though nobody else can see that, LOL.

Those pockets!!
That blue shot cotton!

Anyway, I am getting closer to finishing summer projects for Camden.  She is crazy lacking in dresses, though, and I hope to sew up a few of those after I complete a shorts outfit for her.

Stash Diving for a Modkid Julia Skirt!

I could pretend this is a simple skirt, like the Oliver and S Hula Hoop, but let's not kid ourselves....it's "simple," in regards to construction, but the miles of hemming and gathering does slow one down a teeny bit, LOL.

BUT.

Clearly, the Modkid Julia is way cute, and I love it!  I sewed a couple Julia skirts in a size 3 a couple years back, and they were BIG and technically still fit Camden, but I passed them on to her wee friend up in Vancouver, as I was all, "Dude, I can make you another."
Awww!  In her Aneela Hoey fabric and Magical sweater!

I did a size 5, just to get more use out of it, pretending that I didn't know it's so BIG.  I should have done a size 4, but whatevs.  It's fun, and I love it.

I had a brain fart, for lack of a cooler expression, when I was attaching the casing for the twill tape.  I asked in the Modkid group, and Patty and someone else were quick to answer.  As always, I'm a nutjob and actually realized I should start reading directions, aha!  Problem solved, I forged ahead, and all was naturally well.

Not much to say about the pattern itself.  Again, it's easy and quick enough, instructions are great, and you can have a lot of fun with the fabrics.  I used a dotted sateen for the underskirt (I mentioned in the last post, I believe, that Superbuzzy has it on sale!)

So, there you have it!  Fun skirt, happy girl, all is well!!!

She likes the porch pose, aha!

Penguins in Spring - A Modkid Addison

Wow!  It's ONLY been four months or so since I've sewn this dress, so, it MUST be time to blog about it, right???
Faaaaake smiles....
It's such a cute dress, and my photos don't do it justice, but as with Camden's first Modkid Addison, I just love it!
How tiny!!!!
A month or so after the wedding - also in a lovely Saffron, knit by Vieve over at TWSC
When I made it the first time, it was for her Aunt Jeannette's wedding, and I just couldn't stop staring at the cuteness, aha!  One small bit of sadness when I made it the first time was that it was quite snug to try and get on Camden, though I made the correct size....so, THIS time, I sized up, and it's naturally too big.  Of course.  Even at four months later, I don't like how much room there is in the back, but ah, well - it'll fit lovely even this time next year, when it's more appropriately sized ;)  I think I ended up making the size 6, as I was so worried it'd be tight to get on if I made the 5.

As for deets on the pattern itself - there is nothing fancy to say!  It goes together nicely, the instructions are great, and it's easy enough for a newbie.

I originally made this version for Camden to wear to her first viewing of The Nutcracker, which was exciting for her and Greta, her friend, as you can tell ;)
Photo taken by Greta's mom!
I used some lovely penguin/wintery fabric I had in my stash, along with a fun cotton sateen I purchased from Superbuzzy.  They always have such fun fabrics, but their site really needs an overhaul, in terms of speed/loading - not sure what that is, technically-speaking, but go ahead and check them out, aha!  (I also totally just ordered four more colors in the sateen dots, as they're on sale!)

Should have clipped down those seam allowances....my bad :O
A downside to this post and the next two is that Camden has been rather sullen about pictures - that combined with being tired and cold makes for a good time for photos, LOL.

Again, though, great pattern....and am i REALLY the ONLY person who wishes Patty Young would put paper patterns out again?????

Such joy, LOL

Four Score and Many Moons Ago, I Sewed a Modkid Sydney

Holy cats, did I sew this Modkid Sydney soooo long ago!  I can't recall - maybe it was late last fall, but definitely before February, LOL.  I honestly figured Camden wouldn't get to wear it until she was closer to five. My bad :O  She begged to wear it yesterday, and I was all, "That will be TOO BIG for you, but whatever."

I was wrong.  Oops.  As you can see, it's definitely a loose-fitting dress, and it's her third garment made from this pattern.  Though there is an option to do short sleeves or a shirt option - or a different hood, even - I always do the same style.  It's just fun...and my one chance, generally speaking, to enjoy mixing up fabrics.  I'm not super brave, clearly, and always choose coordinates from the same line, but a woman can feel like a risk-taker, right??

After a bit of sleuthing, I know now/remember which fabric line I used, and it was the Monsterz line, designed by Michele Brummer Everett, for Cloud9 Fabrics.  I originally bought the fabric from Hawthorne Threads, and they've always shipped quickly to me!

Also, great last-minute photography session, LOL....we were outside the library and having a spot of food before heading inside for story time.  I almost feel my phone did a better job taking pictures than my camera has lately...ah, well.

The pattern is insanely easy, so, it's something fun to whip up if you have enough yardage of several  fabrics that work nicely together.  My only secret dream is that the neck/hood seam wasn't exposed...which I guess I could make happen if I sewed a full bodice lining.  Otherwise, you can't ask for an easier pattern that has a neat look to it.

And that's that, folks....as you can see below, it's a favorite :)

Also....silly guy!  Somebody was causing trouble while we were taking pictures!  He seemed to think he eats bagels.  Too bad he has a mean mom, LOL.
